Romeo y Julieta se cuenta entre "las cinco grandes tragedias"; de William Shakespeare (1564-1616), una de las mas celebres del teatro universal. Siendo como es de creacion juvenil, esta obra se caracteriza por su tono lirico. Su tema, procedente de la literatura italiana, le confiere una atmosfera luminosa que contrasta con el sombrio ambiente nordico de sus otras tragedias. La dramatica atraccion de los dos protagonistas es reconocida como uno de los mejores ejemplos de amor imposible. La traduccion es de Pablo Neruda.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
