"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
With this sweeping generalization, Pride and Prejudice begins, and whether or not you agree with Mrs. Bennet's premise in Jane Austen's classic novel, you have to read on.
Originally written in 1797 under the title First Impressions, this is the story of the romantic and ideological sparring of the spirited, vibrant Elizabeth Bennet and the egotistical Mr. Darcy. But it is also a comedy of manners, a caricature of English society depicted in the microcosm of the Bennet family. Here is a courtship farce that takes place through a series of letters, ballroom flirtations, and parlor discussions.
Austen's forte was her portrayal of women—they are the most dynamic and believable characters in the book. And though it is an eighteenth-century English family she captures on the page, her story of love and ideals is universal.
Reprinted faithfully from the first London edition of the work, this volume also includes critical essays by Virginia Woolf and Julia Prewitt Brown.

Work Description
Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 novel of manners written by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness.
Mr. Bennet, owner of the Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire, has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family faces becoming very poor upon his death. Thus, it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot.
