Herbert Allen Giles

[English] Herbert Allen Giles (b. 1845 in Oxford; d. 1935 in Cambridge) was a British diplomat and sinologist. He modified a Mandarin Chinese Romanization system earlier established by Thomas Wade, resulting in the widely known Wade-Giles Chinese transliteration system.
