  • The New Shakespeare provides a text (a play to a volume) of all Shakespeare's plays and poems which takes full account of
the scholarship — bibliographical, historical and linguistic of the twentieth century, together with all the material necessary to bring the student or the general reader to the fullest understanding and enjoyment of what Shauespeare wrote.
  • Each volume contains
-— the text of the play, free from annotation and clearly printed
    — full notes, both textual and explanatory
    — an introduction by the editors
    — a stage-history
—a valuable glossary of difficult words and phrases
  • The New Shakespeare, begun in 1921, has been edited through- out by the doyen of modern Shakespeare scholars, Dr John Dover Wilson, initially in partnership with Sir Arthur Quiller- Couch, and latterly with the help of other distinguished
Shakespeare scholars Professor G. I. Duthie, Dr Alice Walker, Professor J. C. Maxwell and Professor Peter ure. The aim throughout has been to provide the modern reader with the closest possible approach to what Shakespeare wrote or in. tended and the earlier volumes have been from time to time revised in the light of new knowledge or maturer consideration.
  • The Paperback New Shakespeare is a photographic reprint of the original setting, unabridged and in its latest revision, with the type enlarged for greater clarity. It offers a unique combination of scholarship, completeness, comprehensiveness,
    readability and price.
  • The New Shakespeare is also available in cloth bound volumes.
  • The New Shakespeare, recorded by the Marlowe Society of Cambridge and professional players, is available on 10 playing records issued by the Argo Record Company of London (U.S.A.: London Records Inc).

Work Description

The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand.
