His eldest daughters both then reject him at their homes, so Lear goes mad and wanders through a storm. His banished daughter returns with an army, but they lose the battle and Lear, all his daughters and more, die.

Edition Notes
The title-page is followed by 'The Epistle Dedicatory To My Esteemed Friend Tho. Boteler, Esq;', signed: 'N. Tate'; 'Prologue' and list of 'The Persons' precede the main text; 'Epilogue, Spoken by Mrs. Barry' on verso of final leaf.
'In 1681 Betterton appeared at Dorset Garden in 'King Lear' as altered by Tate, and this alteration of 'King Lear' actually held the stage until about 1840. The part of the fool is entirely omitted, and Cordelia survives to marry Edgar. Addison protestedagainst the outrage on Shakespeare ('Spectator', No. 40). But Tate's adaptation was defended, on grounds of poetical justice, by Johnson, whose feelings had been agitated by witnessing the death of Cordelia' [DNB].
Caption title: 'King Lear. A Tragedy'; running title: 'King Lear'.
Wing S2919; T.C. II, 296; Woodward & McManaway 1199 [under Tate]; Jaggard 356.
