Il est six heures moins dix. Un flash spécial de la NBC plonge l'Amérique dans la stupeur. Sans cravate, en cardigan marron, le président des Etats-Unis vient d'annoncer la mort de Jensen et de Rosenberg, les deux plus hauts magistrats de la Cour suprême.

La disparition, à quelques heures d'intervalle, de ces deux figures légendaires, ne peut être le fait d'une coïncidence. Or ni la CIA ni le FBI, qui ne disposent pas du moindre indice, ne savent par où commencer l'enquête.

Seule l'intuition de Darby Shaw, brillante et opiniâtre étudiante en droit, permet d'établir un lien fragile entre les deux assassinats. Dès lors, avec l'aide d'un journaliste du Washington Post, elle défie un ennemi invisible aux moyens illimités, un gouvernement soucieux d'étouffer l'affaire, et des tueurs prêts à la liquider au premier faux pas.
