About the Book

Told in third person by an all-knowing narrator, "Animal Farm" takes place on an English farm. The oldest pig on the farm, Old Major, calls for a clandestine meeting of all animals. He shares with them his dreams about a revolution against Mr. Jones, the farm owner. When Old Major dies, the other animals decide to fulfill his dream and start a rebellion that results in taking control of the farm and creating their own set of commandments.

First Sentence

MR JONES, of the Manor farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes.
