Emma Goldman (1869–1940) setzt sich in diesen größtenteils um 1910 entstandenen Texten, die ursprünglich in der von ihr veröffentlichten Monatszeitschrift Mother Earth erschienen, mit zahlreichen Aspekten des politischen und gesellschaftlichen Lebens ihrer Zeit auseinander. Sie widerlegt den Vorwurf, Anarchismus sei letztendlich Chaos und propagiere Gewalt, und definiert ihn stattdessen als Grundlage für eine ungehinderte menschliche Entwicklung, wahren gesellschaftlichen Fortschritt und eine wahrhaft harmonische Gesellschaft.
Aus diesem Blickwinkel kritisiert sie Regierung, Patriotismus, Militarismus, Gefängnisse, Kirche, Puritanismus, Ehe und Eigentum aufs Schärfste. Aber auch Emanzipation und Frauenwahlrecht kommen nicht ungeschoren davon.
Doch Emma Goldman ist bei Weitem nicht gegen alles: Nicht nur der Syndikalismus weckt ihre Begeisterung, sondern auch die Bestrebungen zu freier Bildung, die in einigen freien Schulprojekten umgesetzt werden, und das Theater ihrer Zeit, das sie länderübergreifend analysiert und das ihrer Ansicht nach den idealen Nährboden für radikale Ideen darstellt.
Auch Jahre später weicht sie in ihrer Autobiografie Gelebtes Leben keinen Deut von ihren Überzeugungen ab und noch heute sind ihre Texte hochaktuell.
