La supervivencia de un soldado depende de lo que lleva. En la guerra, la línea que separa la vida de la muerte es más tenue que nunca, y a menudo las provisiones, las armas, el equipo de un soldado son lo único que puede hacer que la línea no se borre. Pero un soldado también lleva su memoria, lleva recuerdos, amuletos, fantasmas del pasado, objetos triviales que no le dejan olvidar que hay otra vida —la vida— más allá de la guerra.
Los soldados de la compañía Alfa, que combatió en Vietnam, llevaban todo lo que podían. Y esos hombres y esas cosas van haciendo su aparición en las historias que nos cuenta Tim O'Brien, que también combatió en Vietnam, y participa en su libro a veces como un joven soldado de veintiún años, o como un maduro escritor de más de cuarenta que recuerda. Así, en «Viaje al campo», el autor, en compañía de su hija, una niña de nueve años, vuelve a Vietnam a buscar el lugar donde murió Kiowa, su mejor amigo. Y «En el río Rainy» nos cuenta cómo, tras haber huido a Canadá, decidió regresar a su pueblo y aceptó ir a la guerra por vergüenza, porque sintió que, de no hacerlo, no podría soportar las miradas de la gente de su comunidad, para quienes un desertor era para siempre un marginado, un traidor, un excéntrico. Pero este «Timmy O'Brien» es también un personaje ficticio, tan ficticio como el Norman Bowker del espléndido «Hablando de coraje», que cuando vuelve a su pueblo descubre que sólo puede callar porque él sabe hablar únicamente de la guerra, y nadie quiere ya hablar de eso.
Porque, como afirma el autor de estos espléndidos relatos que se encadenan unos a otros en una textura de novela, la mejor manera de contar «historias verdaderas» es inventarlas, pues sólo la imaginación y la ficción pueden dar cuenta de la realidad.

Work Description
The Things They Carried (1990) is a collection of linked short stories by American novelist Tim O'Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers fighting on the ground in the Vietnam War. His third book about the war, it is based upon his experiences as a soldier in the 23rd Infantry Division.
