Archivist, paleographer, and National librarian of France, Henri Lemaître was the grandson of a bookstore owner in Valenciennes. He studied 1899-1904 at the Ecole des Chartes, the French national school for archivists. While subsequently working on staff at the BNF, he frequently published articles and book reviews in the journal Bibliothèque de l'école des chartes. In later years he became active in international efforts, working with the International Library Federation, U.N.E.S.C.O. and others.
