Joseph Edkins

[English] Joseph Edkins (b. 1823 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England; d. 1905 in Shanghai, Kiangsu, China) was a British Protestant missionary who spent 57 years in China, 30 of them in Beijing (Peking). As a Sinologue, he specialized in Chinese religions. Edkins was also a linguist, a translator, and a philologist. He wrote many books about the Chinese language and the Chinese religions especially Buddhism.

[Deutsch] Joseph Edkins (* 1823 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, England; † 1905 in Shanghai, Kiangsu, China) war ein britischer protestantischer Missionar, der 57 Jahre in China, davon 30 in Beijing (Peking) verbrachte. Als Sinologe war er spezialisiert auf chinesische Religionen. Edkins war auch Sprachwissenschaftler, Übersetzer und Philologe. Er schrieb viele Bücher über die chinesische Sprache und die chinesischen Religionen, insbesondere den Buddhismus.
