Justification: The Heart of the Christian Faith was written in defence of the traditional protestant (Lutheran) interpretation of the biblical doctrine of justification of sinners. The occasion was the issuing of a joint declaration on the subject by Lutherans and Catholics in Germany. Jüngel believed that those on the Lutheran side were being too hasty and giving too much ground on issues that were important. He defends his views in chapter 5 in particular -- by far the longest chapter. This chapter will stimulate readers to think far beyond the apparent limits of the topic. Moreover, they will find the book overall to be an excellent introduction to many major points of the theology of this, one of the key German theologians of the last few decades. From chapters 2 and 3 one will gain valuable insights into ancient and modern thought on the ideas of justice and justification. Chapter 4 is one of the most detailed, original and thought-provoking expositions of the problem of sin to be found anywhere.
