The Indian Antiquary was (with variations) subtitled as “A Journal of Oriental Research in Archaeology, Epigraphy, Ethnology, Geography, History, Folklore, Languages, Literature, Numismatics, Philosophy, Religion, &c., &c.” From Vol. 1, Part 1, Jan. 1872 to Vol. 62, Part 783, Dec. 1933, it served as a medium of publication for original communications of the highest standard of scholarship.
The Indian Antiquary was founded by James Burgess (1832–1916) in 1872. Later it was acquired by Sir Richard Carnac Temple (1850–1931) as his sole property. Temple was editor-in-chief of the journal for 46 out of the 51 years, also creating the Epigraphia Indica, the official record of epigraphic work in India, as a supplement to the Indian Antiquary. Fom 1885 to 1892, from the Vol. XIV to Vol. XX, John Faithfull Fleet (1847–1917) edited the journal.
In 1924 Mr. Temple transferred his interest in the journal to a small private company, and from 1925 to 1932 the journal was “published under the authority of the Council of the Royal Anthropological Institute” (of Great Britain and Ireland). Mr. Temple held the editorship, at first in association with Stephen Meredyth Edwardes (1873–1927), then, after his death in 1927, with Charles Evelyn Arbuthnot William Oldham (1869–1949). On Temple's death in 1931 Oldham became editor-in-chief.
In 1932 the Royal Anthropological Institute ended its connexion with the Indian Antiquary, due to “financial conditions”, as Nature wrote. In 1932 and 1933 the journal been carried on by Mr. Oldham in order to complete publication of matter in hand. The last issue of Indian Antiquary, Vol. 62, Part 783, came out on December 1933.
It was continued in August 1938 by the New Indian Antiquary.
