An historical account of the Ten Thousand, an army consisting mostly of Greek mercenaries, hired by Cyrus the Younger in an attempt to seize the Persian throne from his brother Artaxerxes II. Although his army was victorious, Cyrus himself was killed in battle, thus forcing the Greeks to retreat. Xenophon was a Greek soldier who took part in the campaign and later became one of the leaders in the forced retreat.
