"A century after his death, Walt Whitman is still celebrated as America's greatest poet. In this striking new edition of his work, Whitman biographer Gary Schmidgall presents more than two hundred poems in their original pristine form and in the chronological order in which they were published. These extraordinary poems return us to the physical Whitman, rejoicing - sometimes graphically - in sexual pleasure. This edition follows Whitman's clearer, original punctuation and makes natural line breaks.

Also included in this volume are Whitman's major prose discussions of his poetry, all four of his elegies for Abraham Lincoln, early poems written before Leaves of Grass, and contemporary - and sometimes blistering - reviews of Whitman's poetry."--BOOK JACKET.

Work Description

Leaves of Grass is a poetry collection by American poet Walt Whitman. First published in 1855, Whitman spent most of his professional life writing and rewriting Leaves of Grass, revising it multiple times until his death. There have been held to be either six or nine individual editions of Leaves of Grass, the count varying depending on how they are distinguished.[2] This resulted in vastly different editions over four decades—the first edition being a small book of twelve poems, and the last, a compilation of over 400.
