In the university town of Ithaca, the appearance of a fox at a Christmas Party sparks transformations in the lives of those attending, particularly the hostess, Michelle Wolcott. In this cosmopolitan yet bucolic setting, blessed with its numerous waterfalls, and beautiful, dangerous gorges, the Wolcotts live an idyllic, albeit wintry life, which Michelle knows she should find fulfilling. Following the party, Michelle’s old trouble with migraines returns, bringing frightening sensations, confusion, and the recurring vision of a body in the water. With the aid of a shaman, she approaches a new understanding of the nature of existence, learns to open her heart, and finds that spiritual forces are conspiring to take her life in a new direction.

Excerpts

I saw him coming, the husband, the exemplary professor, encased
in his voracious black machine. Its broad beams of light slashed a
swath in the darkness, startling the snowflakes, revealing them just
as the flux of his passing disrupted their innocent descent, sending
them whirling in intricate, invocative convolutions.

Most of her life Sam had felt other entities in her, around her,
through her, beings of light. She had never feared them, as children
often do, they were never monsters to her, foes, though she felt them
pushing and pulling. She saw them as guardians, or guiding spirits,
shielding, circling, centering, or sometimes as peers, doubles inhabiting
parallel worlds. They seemed to exist in a different dimension,
a lesser density, the ‘higher plane’ people spoke of. Her body was
comprised of them, theirs were composed within and without hers,
pervading yet discrete, as if assembled with the very same particles
but according to a disparate, preternatural mathematics, coexisting
at a higher velocity, wavelength, or amplitude, ever-present but at
the edge of cognizance.

This novel deals extensively with the interaction between the mundane and ethereal worlds.
