Colección Austral presenta en este volumen Luces de bohemia, esperpento trágico de la vida literaria en una sociedad irrespirable. Al degradarse la realidad aparece la farsa y, en un segundo nivel, el esperpento; «Los héroes clásicos reflejados en los espejos cóncavos dan el Esperpento», aclara Velle-Inclán. Aquí el espejo cóncavo es una conciencia dolorida, una conciencia moral que escandaliza o aterra. Resulta patético que quien vea la verdad sea un ciego, Max Estrella, soñador perdido en un Madrid absurdo y hambriento. Alonso Zamora Vicente, catedrático de literatura y Secretario de la Real Academia, descubre en esta edición las claves del universo mágico de Valle-Inclán, de su visión voluntariamente deformadora, y revela al lector la crítica contra una sociedad en descomposición que se oculta bajo la caricatura.
