Situada en la época de las luchas entre Gran Bretaña y Francia por el control de América del Norte, El último mohicano es una novela cuyo entramado histórico resulta especialmente correcto incluso en los detalles más secundarios. Ambientada en el territorio de los Grandes Lagos la trama de la novela se desarrolla en 1757 cuando un grupo formado por Alicia y Cora Munro hijas del coronel Munro el mayor Duncan Heyward, un guía indio llamado Magua y David Gamut maestro de música abandona el fuerte británico Edward de camino hacia el William Henry. Durante su trayecto se encuentran con Ojo de Halcón o Hawkeye y sus dos amigos indios Chingachguk y su hijo Uncas el último de los mohicanos. Tras pasar diversas peripecias la partida consigue llegar al fuerte William Henry que se encuentra sometido al asedio del francés Montcalm. Munro se ve obligado a rendirse pero pese a las garantías francesas en el momento de la capitulación los hurones atacan a los inermes británicos desencadenando una carnicería. Magua que ha demostrado ser un traidor captura a Alicia y a Cora y Ojo de Halcón sus amigos indios Heyward y Munro partirán en su busca.
