William R. Scott was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. He attended Carleton University, then worked for an accounting firm where he obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1956. He worked as accountant and later treasurer for an Ottawa construction company while also teaching part-time at Carleton. He joined the faculty of Carleton full-time in 1961. In 1966 he enrolled in the School of Business of the University of Chicago and went on to receive both his MBA and Ph.D. He then returned to the faculty at Carleton, and then moved to the School of Business of Queen’s University in 1970, where he taught until 1983. In 1983, he joined the faculty of the School of Accounting and Finance of the University of Waterloo, from which he retired in 1995. He now maintains his textbook and teaches part-time at Queen’s University's School of Business.
