E. James Lieberman was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1951, he graduated from Oakland Technical High School. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and the University of California at San Francisco, graduating with his M.D. in 1958. He completed his Psychiatry residency at Harvard. He then received his Master's degree in Public Health. In 1963, he moved to Washington, D.C. and served seven years at National Institute of Mental Health. He then entered private practice, and began teaching at Howard and George Washington University medical schools. In 2006 he retired from practice and teaching.
