„Die Zukunft ganz Asiens steht auf dem Spiel, und nicht minder die gigantischen Anstrengungen, die Amerika für dieses Gebiet unternommen hat … Ich kenne nur einen Mann, der die Fähigkeit, die Kraft und die Entschlossenheit hat, die Niederlage abzuwenden, die China jetzt unmittelbar bedroht.“ Diese Botschaft schickte Präsident Roosevelt im Juli 1944 an Chiang Kai-shek. In ihr forderte er offiziell die Einsetzung General Stilwells, des Amerikaners, als Befehlshaber der gesamten Streitkräfte Chinas.

SAND GEGEN DEN WIND ist schon aus histrorischen Gründen das bedeutendste Werk Barbara Tuchmans. Was hier ans Licht kommt über die chinesisch- amerikanischen Beziehungen in der entscheidenden ersten Hälfte unseres Jahrhunderts, das wird an politischer und geschichtlicher Bedeutung im Laufe der siebziger Jahre noch erheblich zunehmen, da die Beziehung Chinas zu den Vereinigten Staaten wie zur übrigen Welt einem Wendepunkt zustrebt. Barbara Tuchman schildert China aus der Perspektive der pazifischen, europäischen und russischen Fronten. Aber: „Schließlich ging China seinen eigenen Weg; es war als wären die Amerikaner nie dagewesen.“

Work Description

Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911–45 is a work of history written by Barbara W. Tuchman and published in 1971 by Macmillan Publishers. It won the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. The book was republished in 2001 by Grove Press It was also published under the title Sand Against the Wind: Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911–45 by Macmillan Publishers in 1970.

Using the life of Joseph Stilwell, the military attache to China in 1935 to 1939 and commander of United States forces and allied chief of staff to Chiang Kai-shek in 1942 to 1944, this book explores the history of China from the Revolution of 1911 to the turmoil of World War II, when China's Nationalist government faced attack from both Japanese invaders and Communist insurgents.
