Married life has not turned out as Dan expected. Rather than providing for his family while his wife made a home, he has become a house-husband as Jackie's "little job" turned into an executive position. Approaching 50, he has a new brainwave involving a move to Scotland. The family is not amused.

With a high-flying job in the City, a strong marriage to the beautiful Jackie, and three wonderful children, Dan Porter thought he had his life sorted. But when his struggling new firm operates a 'last in, first out' policy, Dan finds himself made redundant for the first time in his life. Fourteen months on, he is still without a job and the strain is beginning to tell on his marriage. Then he sees an article in a magazine about a small mail-order company, based in the west of Scotland, that is up for sale.
