"Low and medium energy hadronic systems seem to behave experimentally as though they have a rich extended or composite nature: primitive bound quark models give a surprisingly good description of static properties, and linear Regge trajectories indicate the existence of a fundamental length; on the other hand, free quarks are not seen, though the quark model would predict their mass to be rather small."
