Book Details
First Sentence
"MY object in this volume is to trace very briefly the rise and decay of Medieval Art, and thence to argue first that its origin was less definitely religious than is commonly supposed; secondly, that its decay was gradual-a logical and natural consequence of its evolution-and lastly, that its deathblow came not so much from the Reformation as from that general transformation of the western intellect which we call the Renaissance."
