The Book of the Springfield, E. C. Crossman and Roy F. Dunlap, Small-Arms Technical Publishing, Georgetown, SC, 1950 describes the history of the M1903 Springfield rifle, officially the United States magazine Rifle Caliber .30 Model 1903 for the Model 1906 Mark I Ammunition. THe ammunition date is why we tend to call this the .30/06 rifle. The M1903 Springfield was the most accurate military rifle made for general issue. The book was originally published in 1950 and some later authors have made corrections, but it remains the best source on the M1903 Springfield.
