First Sentence

"A DISTINGUISHED French traveller in the latter part of the 17th century, speaking of the ruins of Ephesus, thus observes:-"The greeter part of these ruins we cannot make out, whatever application and diligence we may employ"; and the result has been that the most confused and contradictory opinions are held by those who have treated on the subject; and that travellers often know less about the edifices of this famous city after they have visited its ruins, than they did before."
