The Author explores the deep connection that the human animal has with procreation and how that fundamental drive was the precursor to a vast world of symbolism surrounding it, but more than that he elucidates on how the ancient philosophers saw sex itself as a symbol of life. The Father/Spirit plunging into the Mother/Matter human body. In many religions, the Male was represented by fire, the Sun or possibly a small flame, while the female was represented by water or the Moon, or possibly a candle for instance.....material things. Matter is "Virgin" until it receives the Spirit of life. So sex would symbolize the immersion of spirit into matter. A very good read.
