Excerpts

THREE men, one in the concert hall listening to a symphony of Beethoven, another in the opera house listening to a presentation of one of Wagner's music-dramas, a third in his own home listening to a sentimental tune sung by a radio performer, are all doing the same thing, or rather, are having the same thing done to them: the atmosphere about them is supplying them with oxygen and transmitting to them waves of compressions and rarefactions set up by certain vibrating bodies.
