The area of the West, as the term will be used in this book, is all of that vast land bounded on the north by the Canadian border, on the south by the Mexican border, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the east by the western edge of the Mississippi River Valley, including also western Wisconsin, as well as Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and western Louisiana.
