Meet David Greer. He's a wisecracking, thirty-something everyman who's fiercely smart and unapologetically gay. He's also struggling to make it big as a writer in New York, a goal that seems far off considering his day job as a reluctant editor for a slew of porn magazines. His only glimpse into the world of fame and fortune is through occasional party invites from his old friend Warren Junior, a professional gossip famous for his catty "Off the List" column.

At one of these fabulous soirees David meets - and falls for - TV hunk Alan Dillinger, star of the hit show Lifesavers. He's handsome, smart, caring, rich, famous - everything David could want in a man, except for one thing: He's closeted. The ensuing courtship, complete with scheming agents and publicists, sharklike paparazzi, and a particular prying gossip columnist, is a wild ride through the terrain of gay relationships in the nineties.

First Sentence

"It's startling to learn this about myself, but I can walk through a crowded Manhattan apartment sale and notice a plastic Farrah Fawcet-Majors head circa 1977 in mint condition under a table near the back, even if the box is partially covered by a trash bag."

Work Description

From Amazon.com:

In this hilarious romp through gay New York, author Matthew Rettenmund once again delivers with acerbic wit, dead-on dialogue, and perfect pop culture references. This time, a lonely magazine editor has fallen for a TV star hunk, who, unfortunately, must remain firmly in the closet or risk his career. Which will win out, true love or shallow fame? Rettenmund answers the question with verve and attitude, in this wonderful second novel of love and loss in modern Manhattan.
