Date based on form of printer's name and address. Cf. Brown, Philip A. H. London publishers and printers, 1982.

Publisher's advertisements for artist's supplies on p. 1-20 at end, including announcement on p. [1]: "Prize Medals Awarded. Messrs. George Rowney & Co. Have the pleasure to announce that by their system of grinding colours by machinery, They are enabled to supply Artists' colours in oil, water, or powder ... ".

Chromolithographed plates are unsigned and without imprint.

Illustrations, diagram and plates are the same (with some differences in colour and outline) as those used in the "Twenty-eighth edition" of this title published [ca. 1889] by George Rowney and Company. See McLean D 0461.

"Price One Shilling"--Cover.

MASS copy: In original glazed yellow printed paper wrappers. Upper cover printed in black with variation of t.p. Lower cover printed in black with publisher's advertisements listing "Geo. Rowney & Co.'s Treatises on the Fine Arts.", the list including "Hints on sketching from nature", Part I, II and III, and the footnote: "*Three Parts bound in one, cloth and gilt, 5s." (See McLean D 0459-McLean D 0461). Upper cover with ownership inscription: "H. S. King.".
