Preliminary wood-engraved plate with signature: "EL" [i.e. Ebenezer Landells].

"The plan and designs for the work are quite original, and I have been greatly assisted in it by my daughter, Miss Alice Landells. The directions and illustrations for dressing dolls, furnishing houses, &c., as well as many of the more ornamental toys, are entirely her own production; and the way she has executed that part of the work will no doubt be appreciated, for its general utility and completeness."--Introduction.

Wood-engraved illustrations and diagrams within the text are unsigned.

Illustrations are the same as those used in the "Second Edition" of this title published in 1860 by Griffith and Farran. See McLean D 0647.2.

MASS copy: Bound in blue pebble-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind in the same design as McLean D 0647.2; a.e. speckled red. Upper cover blocked in gold with title design incorporating decorative and illustrated border. Design with signature: "JL" [i.e. John Leighton]. With pastel yellow glazed endpapers. With bookseller's label: "A. Townly, Stationer &c. 6, Victoria Terrace, Surbiton.". With ownership inscription dated 1894: "Marjory Freeman".
