Edition Notes

Date taken from British Library Public Catalogue.

Added colour wood-engraved illustrated t.p. with imprints: "W. Dickes, Licencee, Old Fish St. Doctor's Commons." and "Pubd. by Binns & Goodwin. Bath.".

"I need scarcely say, that I make no pretension to a scientific acquaintance with the department of Natural History to which the following chapters refer. My objects are, to excite or encourage, by means of practical, and I would hope accurate, information, a taste on the part of my readers for a highly interesting pursuit, and to render their study of the works of creation subservient to a knowledge of the Creator."--Preface.

Colour wood-engraved plates are unsigned and without imprint. All are with title captions.

Plates are colour wood engravings produced using the "Baxter Process", with areas and lines that are printed with an intaglio metal plate.

Publisher's advertisements on p. [1-20] at end.

MASS copy: Bound in red morocco-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind. Upper cover blocked in gold with illustration showing two birds hovering over a nest of eggs. Spine with imprint: "Binns & Goodwin". With pale pastel yellow endpapers. With embossed stamp: "Simms & Dinham Bookseller Manchester".
