"The success of this little work has greatly exceeded the author's most sanguine expectation, upwards of 7,000 copies having been already sold. A new edition being now required, he gladly avails himself of this opportunity to make several important additions, consisting of fresh matter interspersed with woodcuts, descriptive of the construction of the Compound Microscope and its various appendages."--Preface to the Third Edition.
Lithographed plates are hand-coloured. All are with imprints: "Tuffen West sc. ad nat.", "W. West imp." and "London: Robert Hardwicke, 1860.".
Lithographed plates and wood-engraved illustrations are the same as those used in a "New edition" of this title published in 1877 by Hardwicke & Bogue. See McLean D 0653.
Wood-engraved illustrations within the text are unsigned.
Includes "Appendix. By Thomas Ketteringham.": p. [95]-106.
MASS copy: Bound in black red-speckled patterned vertical rib-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind; a.e.g. With pale green glazed endpapers. With ownership inscription: "John S. Cahill".
