Contains 26 essays on aspects of English literature. Among her subjects are the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft, Dorothy Wordsworth, and Christina Rossetti. She also reflects on the poetry of John Donne; the works of Daniel Defoe, Lawrence Sterne, George Meredith, and Thomas Hardy; Lord Chesterfield’s letters; and Thomas De Quincey’s autobiography. Noteworthy too is the last essay, "How Should One Read a Book?".

Edition Notes
London edition (Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press) has title: The common reader. Second series.
Lacks printing statement.
List "by the same author" includes works published later than 1932, including Three guineas, first published 1938.--Cf. p. [ii].
Dustjacket also lists works by Virginia Woolf published after 1932.
Kirkpatrick says this "fourth impression of 2000 copies was issued as the Harbrace Edition on 2 February 1939 at $1.49; it was bound in azure-blue cloth boards ... white dust-jacket printed in blue, green and black."
Binding lacks the publisher's blind stamped monogram and the double rule on the upper cover of 1932 edition's dark blue binding.
This title included in "Harbrace editions" list on back of dustjacket.
Kirkpatrick, B.J. Woolf (4th ed.), A18b (notes, p. 54).
002-115851289.
WSU MASC copy has embossed stamp: "JSQ Library of Julia Suthern Quick."
