Title page printed in red and black.

"Printed by C. Whittingham, Chiswick Press".

Plates produced using a combination of intaglio and/or relief processes. Some engraved plates are signed by Shaw. Colour printed plates enhanced with hand-colouring in some instances. Large paper issue; hand-coloured plates more highly finished than the regular paper copies.

MASS copy 1: With the bookplate of Ruari McLean, printed ownership label "Crewe Hall', and circular red leather label blocked in gold and motto 'Vigilantibus'. Bound in red morocco tooled in gold. Binder's ink stamp: Clarke & Bedford.

MASS copy 2: With author's inscription, dated April 5, 1872: "All the coloured plates in this copy of the Alphabets are more highly finished than any offered for sale". With additional hand-colouring on some of the plates.

MASS copy 2: With the hand-illuminated signature: W. Charles Fewtrell, Liverpool. Bound in quarter brown cloth with black paper-covered boards and title blocked in gold on spine.
