Dorothea Zack Hanle

Dorothea Zack Hanle was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of a real estate agent. She was raised in Ship Bottom, Pennsylvania. She was called "Zack" from her childhood. She attended Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and Barnard College. After university, she became a writer for Mademoiselle Magazine. She was also hired by Dell Publishing, for whom she wrote and edited more than 65 pocket-size how-to books. In 1964, under the name Dorothea Zack Hanle, she wrote the book ''The Hairdo Handbook: A Complete Guide to Hair Beauty.''

In 1972, she also became editor of the newly-created Epicure magazine under the name Carter Chase. She then left Dell Publishing and edited Epicure for two more years under her own name. Later, she was editor of Everywoman's Magazine. In 1976 she went to work for Bon Appetit Magazine, and went on to become its editor. From 1997 until her death she was a consultant to the magazine.
