Edition Notes

NUC has note: 'Extracts from various works by Sherlock, arranged in dialogue form'. This work may have been a contribution to the theological pamphlet-war of the time, known as the 'Bangorian Controversy', which was triggered off by Dr. Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Bangor, in 1717. The DNB records of Arthur Ashley Sykes that he was 'a voluminous controversial writer of the school of Hoadly' ... "his whole life", wrote a critic, "was a warfare of the pen, first in the Bangorian controversy, next in the Arian, then in the dispute about Phlegon, and afterwards in the Inquiry concerning the Demoniacs". Thomas Sherlock's long rivalry with Hoadly was said to have begun at Cambridge [DNB]

A 'Preface' follows the title-page; on verso of final page, 23, a printer's advertisement.

ESTC975N1 [under Norris]; ESTC5255S19 [under Sykes]; ESTC2140S10 [under Sherlock].
