"The foundation of various analytical methods for the stable isotope composition of water and other aqueous samples (natural abundance, 1H : 2H (D) = 99.985 : 0.015 atom%, and 16O : 17O : 18O = 99.762 : 0.038 : 0.200 atom%) was established during the Manhattan Project in the U.S.A., when large amounts of heavy water were produced for nuclear reactors (see Kirshenbaum, 1951, for a detailed account)."
