Set during the Spanish Civil War this novel tells the story of an American volunteer in the International Brigade fighting against the fascist forces of General Franco. Sent on a mission to destroy a bridge behind enemy lines he joins up with a group of guerrillas. In their camp he meets and falls in love with a young woman who is supporting the guerrillas.
