Daniel Keyes has produced one of the cleverest works in fiction by adapting his writing style, to incorporate the transition of the character Charlie from a mentally-disabled halfwit with debilitating learning difficulties to a witty, cultured and highly intelligent individual. As his development is accompanied by similar medical tests on Algernon, the eponymous mouse, the novel explores themes of eugenics and natural intelligence as well as how this relates to the meritocratic society he lives in - and the merits of this itself. It also raises perhaps the most important question of all - will greater intelligence bring Charlie greater happiness?
