"Michail Rostovtzeff (1870-1952) is one of the most important ancient historians of the 20th century. His two works, written in the USA and published by Cambridge University Press, on the social and economic history of the Roman Empire and the Hellenistic World, The Social and Economic History of the Roman Empire (1926) and The Social and Economis History of the Hellenistic World ( 1941), shaped entire generations of historians and secured the author an outstanding position in international classical studies. Early on, the personal experiences of the ancient historian were linked to his interpretation of history. The life of Rostovtzeff, a prominent representative of the wealthy intellectual world of St Petersburg, mirrors the history of Russia and Western Europe at the end of the 19th century.reflected in a variety of ways up to the beginning of the 20th century. The First World War, the February Revolution of 1917 and the Bolshevik seizure of power are among the important milestones on this scientist's path of development.
