"The text of Paul Bunyan which is published here represents in all essentials the libretto of Britten's operetta, first performed in New York in 1941 and revised by the composer in 1974 for its first European performances in 1976. I include, however, as two appendices, the texts of two numbers which were heard in 1941 but omitted in 1974. This means that we have access to a text of the libretto as performed in 1941 which at the same time respects the composer's final thoughts about his youthful operetta"--P. 86.
