When H. H. Richardson (fig. 1) stepped off the transatlantic liner at New York in October 1865, he had just turned twenty-seven years old, had just ended an educational exile in Paris begun before the outbreak of the Civil War, and had decided to begin his career in architecture, not in his native New Orleans nor in his adopted Boston but in New York City, the metropolis fast becoming the financial and cultural capital of the United States.
