First Sentence

"THE affectionate Concern expressed by your Lordship, for the Loss of our departed Friend Mr. TOLAND, has made me with some Pleasure attempt the Task of giving a faithful Account of the Man from his own Works ; tho' I know myself very unequal to it, being sensible that the Writer who pursues this Attempt, should be animated, (as a late Biographer observes) with a Portion of that Genius which made the Person, whom he draws for the Knowledge and Imitation of Posterity, famous in his Generation."

Excerpts

THE affectionate Concern expressed by your Lordship, for the Loss of our departed Friend Mr. TOLAND, has made me with some Pleasure attempt the Task of giving a faithful Account of the Man from his own Works ; tho' I know myself very unequal to it, being sensible that the Writer who pursues this Attempt, should be animated, (as a late Biographer observes) with a Portion of that Genius which made the Person, whom he draws for the Knowledge and Imitation of Posterity, famous in his Generation.
