Includes "Preface" (p. [v]-viii) and "Preface to the Second Edition" (p. viii).

Wood-engraved illustrations and diagrams within the text are unsigned.

MASS copy: Bound in olive green diagonal wave-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind. Upper cover blocked in gold with title design incorporating small illustrations similar to those within the text. Design with signature: "JL" [i.e. John Leighton]. With pale pastel yellow glazed endpapers. With presentation inscription dated 1859.
