"The twentieth-century South started much like the nineteenth had ended: the region was still highly defensive and even paranoid about its place in the national scheme of things, still poverty-stricken, suffering a crisis in self-confidence, and numbed by bigotry that was rapidly hardening the relationships between the two races into a racial etiquette that would last well past the half-century mark."
