This song is for all of you who have or had a love-hate relationship with your father. Times they came down on us hard as nails and other times they showed compassion and love. My father made it extremely hard to love him, due to his unpredictable mood swings. After researching our family tree, I discovered my father was a product of his father's household and he raised us as he was raised. With Dad, you never knew where you stood with him and it was hard to gauge the best opportune time to present bad news. I remember my Mom could strike fear in us boys just by mentioning she was going to tell our father when he got home from work. Even though this song expresses regret for not being more friendly with my father before he died, one must remember, with some father's you could never get close to them until they mellowed out in their latter years. Be patient and when the time is right, try to mend and build a relationship, based on respect and understanding and especially you daughters...love.

I Wish I'd Been His Friend...Floyd Thomas Pratt F.H.C., M.A.G.I. 1973
When I was a young boy, my Daddy told me son,
Put your faith in God and you can do no wrong,
When he died I nearly cried, when he died I nearly cried.
When I was a young boy, goin' off to school,
My daddy told me son, don't ever play the fool,
My daddy told me son, don't ever play the fool,
When he died I nearly cried.
Now that he is gone, I know I've been wrong, I fought him all my life,
I wish I'd been his friend before he died, yes, I wish I'd been his friend before he died.
When I was a young boy, goin' in my teens,
My daddy told me son, you keep your soul clean,
Yes, my daddy told me son, you keep your soul clean,
When he died I nearly cried, when he died I nearly cried,
When I was a young man, goin' on 21,
My daddy told me son, your life has just begun,
Yes, my daddy told me son, your life has just begun,
When he died I nearly cried, when he died I nearly cried,
Now that he is gone, I know I've done wrong, I fought him all my life,
I wish I'd been his friend before he died, yes, I wish I'd been his friend before he died.
When I was a young man, age was 23,
I got married and settled down and raised a family,
Yes, I got married and settled down and raised a family,
When he died I nearly cried, when he died I nearly cried.
Now I find myself saying to my son,
Always be a good boy and you can do no wrong,
And I say it, with tears in my eyes,
And I say it, with tears in my eyes,
When he died I nearly cried.
Now that he is gone, I know I've done wrong, I fought him all my life,
I wish I'd been his friend before he died, yes, I wish I'd been his friend before he died.
Now I find myself saying to my son,
Always be a good boy and you can do no wrong,
Always be a good boy and you can do no wrong,
And I say it, with tears in my eyes,
And I say it, with tears in my eyes,
When he died I nearly cried.
