This newspaper article is about Francis Todd, the owner of a ship named Francis, commanded by Captain George B. Milligan, that carried 80 slaves from Herring Bay to New Orleans. Francis Todd claimed libel based on a article edited and published by Benjamin Lundy and William Lloyd Garrison on Nov. 20, [1829], in a newspaper entitled "Genius of Universal Emancipation," which is reprinted in this clipping. Garrison claimed that the 80 slaves suffered great deprivations on the voyage, a claim that tarnished Francis Todd's reputation. Francis Todd claims that the 80 slaves were not restrained and had "accommodations on board [that] were the same as those of steerage passengers."
