The heading or title is: "Fifty Years Ago.---William Lloyd Garrison." William Lloyd Garrison thanks La Roy Sunderland for disclosures relative to Garrison's personal safety. Some wretches in the South would assassinate Garrison for sixpence. He was aware of this danger and peril when he began his advocacy for African rights. Garrison does not "justify the slaves in their rebellion" since he holds the Quaker principle against fighting for liberty.
See Call No. Ms.A.1.1 v.1, p.8 for the original manuscript by William Lloyd Garrison to La Roy Sunderland, written Sept. 8, 1831. This letter also appeared in the Liberator, Sept. 18, 1831.
On the verso of this clipping, is the article "Anecdotes of the Late William M. Hunt," by T. H. B.
Merrill, Walter M. Letters of William Lloyd Garrison, v.1, no.53.
